Anyone can learn to shift gears on a bicycle. But shifting gears in life is something else. That doesn't require technique, but awareness. Knowing when to accelerate. And when to let go. That sounds simple, but in practice, it turns out to be one of the most difficult skills. Why we fall back Many people recognize this: you've had a good conversation, attended a retreat, or taken an inspiring trip. You feel clarity. Peace. Direction. And a few weeks later, you're back in the same pattern. That's not unwillingness. It's simply how behavior works. Insight without anchoring fades. The body doesn't forget What makes the difference in “Searching for the Right Gear” is that insights arise not only mentally, but physically. You have felt them. You know what it is like to: You store that feeling. And you can recall it later. From thinking to doing Shifting gears then ceases to be an abstract idea and becomes a recognizable moment. You notice: this feels like that climb where I kept pushing too long. Or: this is the moment when I should actually accelerate. That makes it practical. Applicable. Useful on Monday morning. Small adjustments, big effect Finding the right gear rarely means radical changes. It is more often about small choices: Just like on a bike: one click can make all the difference. Integration into daily life The goal is not to return “zen.” The goal is to become sharper. More conscious. With a better grip on your energy. You don’t always have to know where you will be in five years. But you do need to know how you are riding today. What you take away At the end of the journey, you don’t take away a checklist, but clarity: And above all: the confidence that you can shift gears when necessary. In conclusion The right gear is not an endpoint. It is a skill you keep practicing. On the bike. In your work. In your life. And the more often you find it, the lighter the ride.
Why We Relapse

Many people recognize this: you've had a good conversation, attended a retreat, or taken an inspiring trip. You feel clarity. Peace. Direction.

And a few weeks later you're back in the same pattern.

That's not a lack of will. It's simply how behavior works. Insight without anchoring fades.

The body does not forget

What makes the difference in "In Search of the Right Gear" is that insights don't just arise mentally, but physically. You've felt them.

You know what it's like to:

Too heavy to drive

Too light to drive

Fits just right

You store that feeling. And you can recall it later.

From thinking to doing

Shifting gears then becomes no longer an abstract concept, but a recognizable moment. You notice: this feels like that climb where I pushed too long. Or: this is the moment where I can actually accelerate.

That makes it practical. Applicable. Useful on Monday morning.

Small adjustments, big effect

Finding the right gear rarely means radical changes. It's more often about small choices:

Don't postpone a conversation

Indicate a boundary

Taking a break

Making a decision that you have been feeling for a long time

Just like on a bicycle: one click can make all the difference.

Integration into daily life

The goal isn't to get back to "zen." The goal is to become sharper. More aware. With more control over your energy.

You don't always need to know where you'll be in five years. You do need to know how you're driving today.

What you bring

At the end of the journey you will not take with you a list, but clarity:

What you let go

What you keep

What you will do differently

And above all: the confidence that you can switch when necessary.

Finally

The right gear isn't an end point. It's a skill you keep practicing. On the bike. At work. In life.

And the more often you find it, the smoother it rides.

That is the right gearNot perfect, but conscious.

Climbing a mountain is simple. You start at the bottom and cycle up. But anyone who's ever done it knows: simple is different from easy. Long climbs provoke behavior. Not because you want them to, but because fatigue leaves no room for masks. What remains is how you truly deal with resistance.

How do you respond to pressure?

Everyone reacts differently when things get tough. Some push themselves. Another slows down to a standstill. Some keep comparing themselves to others, while others retreat into themselves.

On the bike you see this immediately:

Are you starting off too fast?

Do you get frustrated when the pace slows?

Can you continue driving your own ride?

Do you trust the process, or do you want control?

These aren't coincidences. They're patterns you carry with you to your work.

Leadership without a title

You don't have to be a manager to demonstrate leadership. Leadership is about providing direction, making choices, and taking responsibility for your energy.

A mountain asks just that:

You determine your pace

You choose when to switch

You deal with doubt

You keep moving, even when it goes slowly

That is leadership in its purest form.

No room for noise

In meetings, you can talk. On the mountain, not. Your breathing tells you how you're doing. Your legs give feedback. The mountain doesn't respond to excuses.

That simplicity is illuminating. It reveals where you're pushing yourself too far. Or where you can actually handle more than you thought.

Silence works

Many insights arise not from someone speaking, but from a moment of silence. During long climbs, the noise fades away. No notifications. No distractions. Just rhythm.

In that silence questions arise naturally:

Why am I doing it this way?

What costs me energy?

What gives me energy?

Where do I actually want to go?

Not big, but hitting the mark.

From mountain to boardroom

What you learn on the mountain is surprisingly practical. You'll recognize the same feeling later:

In a difficult conversation

When making a big decision

During a busy period

You know what it feels like to slow down without giving up. To keep going without forcing it. To keep going at your own pace, even when others are speeding up.

No quick fix

These kinds of insights don't come in an hour of coaching. They come through time, repetition, and experience. Through physical exertion that quiets the mind.

That's why mountains work. They confront without judgment. They reflect without explanation. And when you reach the top, you know: I'll take this with me. Not because someone said so, but because you've lived it.

That is the right gearNot perfect, but conscious.

We all know it: working harder isn't always the answer. Yet, we all do it en masse. We go the extra mile. We keep going. We don't stop yet. Until we can't anymore.

On the bike, you immediately feel what happens when you're riding in the wrong gear. Shift too hard and you'll get overexcited. Shift too light and you'll stall. Your pace drops, your focus fades, and it ultimately takes more energy than necessary. It's no different in everyday life.

Always "on"

Many people consistently live at too high a speed. They're responsible, driven, and loyal. They dig in, persevere, and solve problems. That's what got them far. But the same strategy that once worked is now starting to backfire.

Signals are often subtle:

Bad sleep

Less enjoyment at work

More easily irritated

Difficulty making choices

Always feeling like I'm running behind the facts

Not because someone is weak, but because he or she has been stuck in the same gear for too long.

The bicycle doesn't lie

On a bike, you can't rationalize this away. A mountain forces you to be honest. You can't bluff gravity. You have to shift gears. Not based on ego, but based on what's needed right now.

That's what makes cycling such a powerful mirror. You'll notice:

When you want to go too fast

When you don't rest

When you compare with others

When you've actually already gone too far

And that is exactly where the parallel lies between work and life.

The art of good switching

Good shifting isn't about harder or softer, but about timing. About feeling what's right. About daring to adjust without feeling like failure.

Life is tricky. We're used to persevering. To not complaining. To "hang in there a little longer." But what if persevering isn't the right strategy?

On the bike, you learn that shifting isn't a weakness, but a skill. It keeps you moving. It prevents damage. It ensures you reach the top with energy to spare.

Space to feel

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, there's little time to take these kinds of signals seriously. Everything goes on. The schedule is full. The phone is ringing. Your mind keeps spinning.

A multi-day bike ride literally takes you out of it. You're outside. You're moving. Your mind becomes quieter. And suddenly you feel things you previously suppressed. Not because you talk about them, but because you experience them.

You notice:

Where you force

Where you relax

Where you have confidence

Where you become insecure

These aren't vague insights. These are concrete signals.

Not vague, but honest

"Finding the Right Gear" isn't about grand life plans or turning everything upside down. It's about taking an honest look: where am I getting stuck? Where am I wasting energy? And what does this phase demand of me?

The bicycle helps with this, because it doesn't make anything prettier than it is. You have to pedal. You have to shift. You have to deal with what's there.

Back home

What you learn, you carry with you. Not as theory, but as experience. You recognize the moment when you're shifting too heavily again. Or playing it too safe. And you know: I can adjust.
