Begin jaren 60 werd de Muro di Sormano voor het eerst opgenomen in de Ronde van Lombardije. Was iedereen daar blij mee? De reactie van de Italiaanse renner Ercole Baldini (die op de steile Sormano gedrukt staat) was duidelijk.

Deze klim is simpelweg beestachting, bijna onmogelijk op de fiets af te leggen. Als koploper moet je met minstens tien minuten voorsprong op de rest bij de voet aankomen. Als je dan af moet stappen, kun je er lopend een kwartier langer over doen dan degenen die het op de fiets doen. Met vijf of zes minuten achterstand op de top, kun je nog hopen’
