Superga Hill in Turin, will the 2022 Giro d'Italia be decided here?

Superga Hill, this mountain will not immediately conjure up a nice cycling memory for you. That will change in 2022. In the 2022 Giro, this mountain on the outskirts of Turin, the capital of Piedmont, will be climbed no fewer than three times. Time for an introduction.

Initially the ascent is quite mild. The first five hundred meters rise with an average of seven percent. After that the steepness increases. Outliers of up to fourteen percent are no exception. The first part with varying steepness is the template for the entire climb. Steep – flat – steep – flat. Halfway through the climb is the steepest part with a maximum of fourteen percent. A few hairpin bends and shady spots characterize the climb. Only once does the Basilica open up to a wide view of the city of Torino.

Almost at the top, at about 600 meters, you can continue straight like the riders during the semi-classic Milano-Torino. They climb the Basilica twice during this classic. At the top of the hill it offers a beautiful view of the 300-year-old basilica of Superga and the metropolis of Torino. Definitely recommended!

AC Torino plane crash

The hill was part of one of the biggest football disasters in Italian history in 1949. On May 4, 1949, a plane crashed into the hill in dense fog and heavy rain. The plane contained players, trainers and supervisors from the AC Torino football club. All 31 passengers were killed, including almost the entire AC Torino team.

At the end of the 1940s, AC Torino became one of the best clubs in Italy. The national team consisted mainly of players from AC Torino. Of the starting eleven, only the goalkeeper did not play for the club from Turin. The Grande Torino team became national champions four years in a row. The club played the competition with youth players. Out of respect, the opponents also fielded their youth team against Grande Torino. A memorial stone on the hill commemorates this disaster.
